Make a Princess into a Queen with an Engagement Ring

The Royal Wedding

This summer many people will take inspiration from the Royal Prince and choose to turn their own Princess into their Queen. We can’t offer advice on how to make the perfect proposal, where or when to pop the question. Nor can we know if the person being asked will give that anticipated answer of ‘yes’. What we do know, is that the answer will be supported with a piece of Jewellery, the engagement ring.

The vein to the heart

An engagement ring symbolises a formal agreement to a future marriage. Rings tend to feature diamonds and other beautiful gemstones. The band signifies unity, with no beginning nor an end to a circle, it represents infinity. The engagement ring is typically worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, because the vein on this finger is believed to lead straight to the heart of the person who wears it. Now that really is a romantic notion.

No price tag for love

Choosing an engagement ring is a personal choice. With so many different colours of metals on the market from Yellow Gold, Rose Gold, White & Platinum Gold as well as varied choices of Silver, it is a hard decision for anyone to make. But apart from the colour, the properties and the aesthetics, the final choice is often selected on price. There is no price tag big enough to put on love, but sadly in today’s world everyone must work to a budget. Weddings alone aren’t cheap, neither is a honeymoon or saving up to provide the right home for the married couple. All these elements make the choice of selecting the perfect ring even more important. A metal band isn’t simply chosen because of its lasting qualities and visual statement, its purchased as a symbol of love and commitment. By someone, for someone, out of love.

Sizing the Engagement Ring

The term ‘one size fits all’ doesn’t apply when buying a ring. The size of the ring finger is as individual as the person who wears it. There are many myths offering advice on how to purchase an engagement ring in secret. Some are funny, and some are unrealistic with the most farfetched being able to estimate the size of the ring finger by shoe size. It is suggested that if the shoe size is divided by 2 and added to 3 this equates to the ring size. We don’t advocate this formula, but we do recommend trying one of the following suggestions.

  • Buying a cheap piece of Jewellery, one that doesn’t have an open back and using this as a size guide;
  •  Taking a piece of string and wrapping it around the finger. Placing a mark at the point where the string meets and placing the length on a ruler to get the size in mms;
  • Enlist the help of a friend or Mother of the future Bride to help work out the size. If nothing else, this will get the new husband talking to his future Mother-In-Law;
  • Using a ring already in the woman’s collection; and finally
  • As a last resort guess the size and have it resized.
